Check out his interviews (audio) with several successful HS coaches. Interesting as to those folks use different techniques to get to tempo runs (even calling them different things)GZhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12623054918799881730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2274438111706927359.post-71810804814025033902015-02-02T18:40:53.509-08:002015-02-02T18:40:53.509-08:00Mark- thanks for both points I couldn't agree ...Mark- thanks for both points I couldn't agree more with both.
natenateruns@hotmail.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01851427962048556845noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2274438111706927359.post-42533923938716972792015-02-02T18:24:27.754-08:002015-02-02T18:24:27.754-08:00Great post, Nate.
As a coach of MS and HS runners...Great post, Nate.

As a coach of MS and HS runners I'll throw out another reason why it is easy to avoid tempo runs (as a coach or young athlete)... they are VERY hard to nail down in the beginning. Many young athletes have two speeds - all out and walking / jogging (ha!). I think teaching a kid to get in touch with all or many of the effort levels in between goes a LONG way in setting them up for future workouts that stress all different types of energy systems / efforts / paces.

I will also second the suggestion of using short flat loops... if you don't monitor the effort over a short distance, those 20 minute tempos quickly become 10 minutes at race effort + 10 minutes of jogging!markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07410295033768893287noreply@blogger.com
